Lincoln’s Family Resource Center is Growing
The S.H. Cowell Foundation recently awarded Lincoln's Family Resource Center, located at the joint campus of New Highland Academy and RISE Community School, $70,000. A portion of this funding will be used to support the hiring of a new, part-time Program Coordinator, whose primary job will be to help gather program data and evaluations for more than a dozen services and programs offered at the FRC.
Launched in 2012, with the generous support of the Cowell Foundation, the FRC has blossomed. Today, its wide array of services support New Highland-Rise families in three key areas: (1) Educational achievement; (2) Health and Wellness; and (3) Parent Engagement. Each year, more than 200 New Highland-Rise families participate its in programs. For some new community members, the FRC is the first stop they make to access basic necessities, such as clothes (the FRC maintains a free community closet), food, and information on health services. Some of its most popular events include "Family Reading Nights," which typically draw more than 100 families from both schools, as well as its weekly Tuesday food give-away. During these Tuesday afternoons, fresh produce from the two on-site urban gardens, maintained by parent volunteers, are given away, for free, to community members.
